Getting Started With Social Media: LinkedIn

A guide that explains how faculty and staff can use social media.


LinkedIn is a business-related social networking site.  With LinkedIn you can:

  • Maintain a list of professional contacts
  • Network with people, organizations, or companies
  • Search for jobs

The Basics

When setting up your profile be sure do the following:

  • To ensure appearing in a Google search fill out your profile completely and use keywords related to your profession
  • Connect with people you know and with those related to your profession
  • Customize your URL to reflect your name ("edit profile" screen)
  • Join groups related to your profession
  • Add applications like Twitter, WordPress, Blogger, etc.
  • If used as your social media home base, be sure to keep your LinkedIn page updated.
