In this video, Princeton University Professor of East Asian Studies and History Benjamin A. Elman discusses the First Sino-Japanese War, as well as the traditional narritives regarding the time period and why he believes that they are not nessecerily the whole truth in his lecture entitled "Undoing/Redoing Modern Sino-Japanese Cultural and Intellectual History" presented during the 2011 Edwin O. Reischauer Lectures at Harvard University's Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies.  

First Sino-Japanese War Overview

This video serves as a brief overview of the First Sino-Japanese War, including the events leading up to it, the war itself, and the resulting aftermath.  It may serve as a complement to Paine's book on the subject, below, providing a contextual historical background before delving into the discussions in the book.
