Panopto is an end to end audio/video content capture and playback solution. Panopto is a software solution that includes a web-based editor, a comprehensive search engine, system and viewing analytics, and automatic transcodes that convert your videos for optimal viewing on any device. The same software can be used for content capture, flipping your classrooms or presentations which means you don't need to learn something new for each different application. Panopto also integrates into Moodle so it's easy to include custom video into your course.
Recording of content can be done on any computer, iOS or Android device. Recordings are automatically uploaded and viewable on any computer or mobile device. The best part is that the playback includes assessment features for academic use that include multiple searching capabilities, note taking, comments, bookmarks, variable speed playback and more.
In order to prepare your course to accept Panopto recordings it must be provisioned first. This needs to be done for each individual course that you want to add recordings to. You must be an instructor of the course to follow these steps for Provisioning your course.
Now your Moodle course is configured for use with Panopto. By default your students are all set up with VIEW access.
You cannot share My Folder itself, but you can share sessions and folders within it. If you try to share My Folder currently, you will receive the Personal folder can't be shared error message.
Panopto Maintains a video repository of How To Video's that we highly recommend.
Panopto was first introduced to Butler in 2009 as a solution for capturing students demonstrating proficiency in COPHS (College of Pharmacy and Health Science) and interacting with clients in counceling and speech therapy sessions in COE (College of Education).
Both Colleges were using old time consuming technology that required both students and faculty to focus more on the technology than the assignment or interactions. Panopto provided a solution that was easy to use and took much less time to process recordings. This allowed faculty to provide students with more timely feedback and has improved learning in both Colleges.
This worked so well in COPHS and COE that Panopto is now the recommended solution for capture of all academic content. To date over 40,000 recordings of academic content have been made using Panopto for lecture capture, student presentations, flipping the classroom, learning modules, demonstration of proficiency and more!!
A new feature in Panopto 5.4 is the ability to embed a YouTube video into your Panopto session from the editor.
This document goes over how to insert a YouTube video.
1. In the editor, go to the the contents tab (you are there by default when you first open the Panopto editor)
2. Click on the Insert YouTube video button.
This will insert a new Table of Contents entry at the location in the timeline that you are currently at.
4. A new screen will show up asking for information related to the YouTube video you are wanting to embed.
These fields are to be filled out.
All rich text input windows throughout Moodle now have a Panopto icon that allows you to use Panopto
Examples of this would be to use a Panopto recording (can be audio only) for feedback on assignments or in discussion forums. You can create recordings or use existing Panopto recordings anywhere in Moodle that you have the text input oprions.
