Panopto: Mobile

Using Mobile Apps

  1. Open the Panopto App and tap Sign In in the top left corner.
  2. In the Panopto Site window enter your server Address (butler.hosted.panopto.com) and then tap Done.  This will take you back to the Sign in screen. 
  3. Make sure Moodle is selected for Account.
  4. Tap on Sign In.
  5. Enter your Butler username and password. 
  6. Tap on Go.
 

1. Login

1.1.  To log into the Panopto iOS App, tap on Sign In in the top left corner (See Figure 1).

1.2.  In the Sign In window, tap on the Change Server button in the top right of the Sign In the window to enter your server name, and then tap Sign In. This will take you back to the login screen (Fig. 2).

1.3.  Enter your Panopto username and password. Once they are entered, click Sign In (Fig. 3).

2. View Panopto Sessions

2.1.  You can view all of the sessions that your account has access to by tapping All Sessions. On this view, you can select the session you'd like to play by tapping on the session (Fig. 4).

2.2.  You can also choose Folders, which will show you a list of folders that your account can access. You can tap the folder to show a list of recordings in that folder. Tap the recording you would like to view, and it will play (Fig. 5).

3. Viewer Overview

Note: For the full viewer experience shown below, your server must be on 4.3.x or higher.

3.1.  When viewing a session you can see and search the slides and events for the session as well as the captions (If applicable) (Fig. 6).

3.2.  If your recording is encoded with captions, tapping the Captions button will bring up the captioning for the session (Fig. 7).

3.3.  The screen will show the thumbnails for each event in the recording. This will also show the option to Play/Pause, rewind 10 seconds, and the current time of the recording (Fig. 8).

4. Offline Viewing

4.1.  Go to All Sessions, then tap on the drop-down arrow for the video you want to view. This should change the arrow to a pause button while the video is downloading (Fig. 9).

4.2.  Tap on the menu in the top left corner then choose Downloaded sessions (Fig. 10).

4.3.  Here you should see the session you just chose for offline viewing (Fig. 11).

4.4.  Alternately, you can swipe left on the session and a Delete button will appear for you to delete the offline recording (Fig. 12).

5. Create Recording

5.1.  To create a recording, tap Record and Upload on the left menu, and tap the folder where you want to store it (Fig. 13).

5.2.  Enter a Session Name and then tap Record a new video to begin recording (Fig. 14).

5.3.  Once you are finished recording, you may preview the video by tapping Play.  You can tap Retake to shoot the video again, or tap Use if the video is acceptable (Fig. 15).

5.4.  Tap Upload to upload your recording to the Panopto server (Fig. 16).

6. Upload Existing Video

6.1.  To upload an existing video, tap Record and Upload in the left menu and tap the folder where you want to create the session (Fig. 17).

6.2.  Enter a Session Name, and then tap Choose a video to upload a video from your iOS device (Fig. 18).

6.3.  Select the video that you wish to upload (Fig. 19).

6.4.  At this point, you can choose to preview the video by tapping Play, change the video by tapping Videos, or tap Use to use the video (Fig. 20).

6.5.  Tap Upload to upload the video to the Panopto server (Fig. 21).

7. Remote Recorders

7.1.  The Panopto Mobile for iOS app allows you to preview and create recordings with the Remote Recorders you have access to. To access the Remote Recorders page click on the navigation bars on the top left of your screen, then tap Remote recorders (Fig. 22).

7.2.  From here you can see all of the Remote Recorders you have access to (Fig. 23).

7.3.  Tap the Remote Recorder you wish to access. From here you can begin a recording. To change the duration of your recording click on the clock icon on the bottom left of the screen. To adjust the options for the Remote Recorder, click Options (Fig. 24).

How to export Panopto videos from your iOS device
  1. Go to the Apple iTunes website to download and install the latest version of iTunes
  2. Install the latest version of Panopto for iOS from the Apple App Store. If you have videos created on the previous version of Panopto for iOS, please ensure that you upgrade Panopto. Do not uninstall the application and install a new copy. As doing so will remove the previously created video files from your device.
  3. Plug in your iOS device to your computer using a USB cable.
  4. Launch iTunes on your computer.
  5. Select your device in iTunes. Get help if you can't find it. 
  6. Click Apps in the list on the left and scroll down to the bottom of the page.
  7. In this section, you'll see a list of file-sharing apps on your device. Select the Panopto app to see the files available for you to download. 
  8. Drag and drop the "videos" folder from the Panopto Documents list to a folder or window on your computer to copy the videos you've created.

Within the videos folder you will see a list of .mov files, and .png files. The .mov files are the video files you've recorded, and the .png files are the thumbnails for that show for the recording in Panopto for iOS.

Uploading with your iPad

In order for sessions to upload via the iOS app the app needs to remain open and the iOS device must remain unlocked. The user that recorded the session must also remain logged into the app for the duration of the sessions upload.

1. Login

1.1.  To login to the iOS app, swipe the screen to the right or tap the menu button in the top left corner, and then tap Sign In (See Figure 1).

1.2.  Enter your server name, and then tap Sign In (Fig. 2).

1.3.  Enter your Username and Password and click Sign In (Fig. 3).

2. View Panopto Sessions

2.1.  To view sessions on the Panopto server, tap the menu button, and then tap All Sessions to see all of the sessions that your account has access to. Tap the recording to begin playing it (Fig. 4).

2.2.  You can also choose Folders, which will show you a list of folders that your account has access to.  You can tap the folder to show a list of recordings in that folder.  Tap the recording you would like to view, and it will play (Fig. 5).

3. Viewer Overview

3.1.  Playing a session will stream the MP4 version of the session (Fig. 6).

3.2.  Tap the screen to show the option to seek, adjust volume, rewind 30 seconds, play/pause, and fast forward (Fig. 7).

4. Offline Viewing

4.1.  Go to All Sessions, the tap on the drop-down arrow for the video you want to view. This should change the arrow to a pause button while the video is downloading (Fig. 8).

4.2.  Tap on the menu in the top left corner then choose Downloaded sessions (Fig. 9).

5. Create a Recording

5.1.  To create a recording, tap the menu button or slide to the right, and tap Record and Upload (Fig. 12).

5.2.  Choose the folder where you would like the session to be stored (Fig. 13).

5.3.  Enter a Session Name, and tap Record a new video and begin recording your session (Fig. 14).

5.4.  Once you are finished recording, you may preview the video by tapping Play. You can tap Retake to record again, or Use if the video is acceptable (Fig. 15).

5.5.  Tap Upload to begin uploading the session to the Panopto server (Fig. 16).

6. Upload Existing Video

6.1.  To upload an existing video, first tap the menu button or slide to the right, and then tap the Record and Upload button (Fig. 17).

6.2.  Tap the folder where you want to create the session (Fig. 18).

6.3.  Enter a Session Name, and select Choose a Video (Fig. 19).

6.4.  Select the video you wish to use (Fig. 20).

6.5.  At this point, you can choose to preview the video by tapping Play, change the video by going back to the Videos folder by tapping Cancel, or tap Choose to use the video (Fig. 21).

6.6.  Tap Upload and it will upload the video to the folder you chose (Fig. 22).

7. Remote Recorders

7.1.  The Panopto Mobile for iOS app allows you to preview and create recordings with the Remote Recorders you have access to. To access the Remote Recorders page click on the navigation bars on the top left of your screen, then tap Remote Recorders (Fig. 23).

7.2.  From here you can see all of the Remote Recorders you have access to (Fig. 24).

7.3.  Tap the Remote Recorder you wish to access and you will be taken to the following screen. From here you can begin a recording. To change the duration of your recording click on the clock icon on the bottom left of the screen. To adjust the options for the Remote Recorder, click Options (Fig. 25).

How to Export Panopto Videos from Your iOS Device

  1. Go to the Apple iTunes website to download and install the latest version of iTunes
  2. Install the latest version of Panopto for iOS from the Apple App Store. If you have videos created on the previous version of Panopto for iOS, please ensure that you upgrade Panopto. Do not uninstall the application and install a new copy. As doing so will remove the previously created video files from your device
  3. Plug in your iOS device to your computer using a USB cable
  4. Launch iTunes on your computer
  5. Select your device in iTunes in the menu barGet help if you can't find it (See Figure 1)

  6. Select File Sharing
  7. Select Panopto from the Apps list in the list on the left and scroll down to the bottom of the page
  8. In this section, you'll see a list of file-sharing apps on your device. Select the Panopto app to see the files available for you to download (Fig.2)

  9. Select the videos folder from the Panopto Documents list and click Save to
  10. Within the videos folder, you will see a list of .mov files and .png files. The .mov files are the video files you've recorded, and the .png files are the thumbnails for that show for the recording in Panopto for iOS
 
 

. Downloading the Panopto App

1.1.  Android tablet and phone users can download the app via the Google Play App Store. Search for Panopto and tap install (See Figure 1).

1.2.  For Kindle Fire users, go to the Amazon App Store and search for Panopto. Tap continue and install.

 

2. Using the App

2.1.  On your tablet or phone tap the Panopto App icon (Fig. 2).

2.2.  You will be prompted to login. If you are not prompted, tap Sign in on the top right of the screen. Type your Panopto server URL, the same address you use to view Panopto recordings on the web and tap OK (Fig. 3).

2.3.  Now you will be asked for your username and password. Enter your credentials and tap Sign In (Fig. 4).

3. Browsing and searching for recordings

3.1.  You will now be shown all recordings where you have access, sorted by date and showing most recent first (Fig. 5).

3.2.  To search for a recording, tap the magnifying glass on the top right of your screen. Type the term you wish to search for and tap Search (Fig. 6). You will now see everywhere that your search term is mentioned. To access the recording tap on the thumbnail.

4. The Tablet Viewer

4.1.  You are now viewing a Panopto recording. You can pause the recording by tapping pause or skip back ten seconds by tapping the rewind button (Fig. 7).

4.2.  You can also drag the progress indicator to seek the recording. To search a recording, tap on the search bar below the primary video on the left. Type the search term and tap Search (Fig. 8).

4.3.  Anywhere your search term shows up in the recording will now be listed in the results. Tap the timestamp and you will be taking to that part of the recording.
 

5. The Phone Viewer

5.1.  The phone viewer will stream the podcast of the Panopto recording. You can rewind 5 seconds by tapping the rewind button and fast forward 15 seconds by tapping fast forward (Fig. 9).

6. Remote Recorders

6.1.  The Panopto app allows you to preview and create recordings with the Remote Recorders where you have access. To access the Remote Recorders page click on the 3 dots on the top right of your screen, then tap Remote Recorders (Fig. 10).

6.2.  From here you can see all of the Remote Recorders where you have access (Fig. 11).

6.3.  Tap the Remote Recorder you wish to access and you will be taken to the following screen. From here you can begin a recording. To change the duration of your recording tap on the clock icon on the bottom left of the screen. To adjust the options for the Remote Recorder, tap Options (Fig. 12).

6.4.  From here you can choose the name of your recording as well as the destination folder and whether or not the session is a webcast (Fig. 13).

6.5. Once you have set up these options, tap the red record button to begin the recording.
 
 

Panopto Mobile for Android 5.0 introduces video uploading that’s as simple as generating content from your desktop computer!  Panopto Mobile for Android 5.0 uses Android’s native camera application, and video gallery to upload content into your Panopto environment.

Prerequisites

  • Creator access to Panopto

 

1. Authenticating into your Panopto Site

1.1.  Upon first opening the Panopto Mobile for Android there will be no server value entered. To connect to your Panopto site click Sign in on the navigation bar at the top of the app (See Figure 1).

1.2.  Here you will be able to enter your Panopto Server name. For Panopto Cloud customers this will look like butler.hosted.panopto.com for on-premise installation customers, this will be determined by your organization (Fig. 2).

1.3.  Next you will be prompted to enter your credentials. The Sign in using drop-down menu is present in the event that your Panopto site uses an external identity provider with an LMS, CMS, or is configured to use SAML (http://support.panopto.com/Documentation?cat=Integrations).



2. Uploading a video with Panopto Mobile for Android 5.0

2.1.  After authenticating you will be greeted with a list of sessions available for your viewing organized by date. The navigation bar at the top provides you a series of options including Search, and Upload.
 
2.2.  Click the Upload button (Fig. 3).

2.3.  The upload interface will provide you a list of Folders where your user account has creator access. Using the drop-down menu, select the desired folder. You can also search for your desired folder by clicking in the field and typing a folder’s name (Fig. 4).

2.4.  Next, click the large Choose video or audio files button, and navigate through your Android Device’s gallery, or other folders to select the video or audio file(s) you want to upload (Fig. 5).

2.5.  Once selected, you can click the file name within Panopto Mobile for Android 5.0 and this will allow you to rename the Video/Audio file before becoming available to viewers of your folder (Fig. 6).
