Dear Colleagues:
Well, I hope I'm not pre-mature in thanking you all for allowing yourselves to be drafted into this ad hoc group. Essentially we will try to accomplish the following:
1) Determine what library/research/information literacy skills our students SHOULD be acquiring in the course of their undergraduate education;
2) Determine what skills should be learned/are needed at which levels/years of study;
3) Suggest various methods for teaching/reinforcing/testing these skills.
4) Identify appropriate courses in each of the JCFA disciplines in which it would be logical that these skill be taught; and
5) Encourage/convince/strong-arm our colleagues who teach these courses to make the teaching/learning of these skills a regular part of their curricula.
I have no desire to have frequent, lengthy meetings and will try to structure the committee in such a way that that will allow us to make optimum use of our time. Also, this is NOT a life-sentence. With any luck, our job will be complete within a year -- perhaps, less.
The first thing I need will be your schedules so that we can set up a meeting time. I'd like to get started as soon as possible (since some of you may be gone/unavailable this summer and we may not be able to meet between June and August). So, please, either e-mail me or place a paper copy of your schedule in my mailbox in the workroom in Lilly Hall by noon, Monday, March 26th, 2001. It probably will be most helpful if you tell me the times that you absolutely CAN'T meet. If you would like to include preferred times TO meet, that would be useful, too. Just make sure that I can tell which is which!
Again, thank you, for your willingness to serve on this committee. I believe the issue with which we will be grappling is a most important one. I'll try to keep it interesting ... and I look forward to meeting with you!

April 2017 - Butler received a grant from the Council of Independent Colleges to attend the Workshop on Information Fluency in the Arts: History, Theory, and Criticism in New Orlean, LA. Tom Paradis, Nicholas Johnson, and Sheri Stormes attended.
At that Workshop, each participating institution wrote up an action plan to further the development of information fluency in the curriculum.
Following the Workshop, a notice was sent out that CIC would be making additional grants available to help further the steps outlined in the institution's action plan.
Here is our Action Plan:
“By graduation, the Butler University School of Music will prepare its students to demonstrate the following:
In September, Butler was notified that it had been named a recipient of one of the CIC Information Fluency Development Grants.
Our grant proposed the following:
Total stipend: 8 faculty X $300 stipend each = $2,400.00
N.B., The Butler team desires to be realistic about the implementation of this proposal and realizes that preparation and development time will be necessary to insure its success. The team feels that it will take a minimum of an entire academic year to implement the three steps described above and some of the training may, in fact, run into the following Academic Year. It is the team’s hope that this will not adversely affect its proposal.
