General Resources for Everyone

Linked on this page are resources that can be used for general research for almost any analysis (industry, competitor, etc.).  For specialized resources, go to the dropdown box under the Individual Resources tab to find resources for a specific type of analysis.

Resources for Everyone

  1. Develop good research questions. Can you describe the type of business information you need?
  2. Identify the relevant NAICS code(s) for the industry in which your business will operate.  If you cannot identify a code, think of descriptive keywords for the industry.
  3. Start preliminary information-gathering in the Business Source Complete database. Use the NAICS codes and also try various keyword searches.
  4. Locate at least one good industry report that describes the industry in which your business will operate. Start with the First Research or IBISWorld database or see the Industry LibGuide
  5. Find additional secondary information (e.g. articles, reports, etc.) using Business Databases.
  6. Use Google to locate trade associations for your industry. Often trade associations will provide free information about your industry.
  7. Start your research early!  If you discover you are having a difficult time finding good information, give yourself plenty of time to contact your Business Librarian.
PUBLIC COMPANIES PRIVATE COMPANIES
