A keyword is a word that you type into a search box, whether it is a research database, an internet search engine (google), or a library catalog. The computer looks for matches between your keyword and the material. You can often get plenty of results with keyword searches, but the downside is that often too many results appear, and they aren't always relevant to your search.
A subject heading is a specific label that a librarian has added to an item to describe the subject of the material. These are consistent across the library industry. Once you find out what the assigned subject terms are for your topic, you can better locate relevant articles by doing a "subject" search. Subject heading searches are trickier than keyword searches because you have to figure out which subject headings work best for your topic, but they are worth the effort because their results are most relevant to your needs.
This video does a really good job in explaining the differences between keywords and subject headings: Keywords vs Subject Headings
Examples of subject headings in Children's Literature include:
Play with the combination of keywords in the catalog (you can use the Discovery search box at the top of this page or go to https://www.butler.edu/library/). If you know the subject heading assigned, you can place su= in front of the word and it will only search the assigned subject headings.
HINT: If the topic you want to search contains more than one word, you will need to place them in quotation marks, such as "juvenile fiction". If you do not, the computer will treat each word as a separate topic to search.
I created a search in the library's catalog for su="juvenile fiction" AND su="graphic novels". I then used the limiters on the left side to narrow my results for only Butler University Libraries and gave a specific date range of 2020-2024. Click here to view the search.
The majority of Butler's Children's and Young Adult Literature Collection is located in the Education Resource Library on South Campus (Room 104).
