Industry Research

The federal government assign codes to business segments for data collection and reporting purposes.  NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) codes were adopted in 1997 to replace the old Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system.  Many industry databases organize information according to NAICS codes.

Use the databases linked below to help you find market research reports and articles on hundreds of industries.

Industry financials and norms may be found in a variety of sources, including print directories and online databases.
When you find industry financials, take note of how the information is presented.  Look for:

  • The date financials were reported
  • The currency used (in thousands, in millions, in U.S. dollars, etc.)
  • Whether or not the figures are "estimates"
  • The NAICS code
  • The source for the financials
