Institutional Review Board

Butler University's Institutional Review Board (IRB) is the institutional body that governs the procedures to be used in research with humans, including protocol approvals as well as suspensions and terminations. The board ensures compliance with the Code of Federal Regulations and the Federal wide Assurance, a declaration of compliance for the protection of human subjects in research. Butler IRB members are appointed by the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs for three-year staggered terms.

A number of avenues exist at Butler for formal learning about ethical conduct of research and the standards within this research community. Education has long been required for individuals participating in Human Subject research and Animal research. Online education focused on Responsible Conduct of Research is available via Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI).

Typically RCR education addresses the following topics:

  • Data Acquisition and Management—collection, accuracy, security, access
  • Authorship and Publication
  • Peer Review
