Using Butler Ebooks

Using an ebook from an academic library is often different than reading a personal ebook, or an ebook from the public library. Butler's ebooks are accessible from many different websites (platforms), and what a user is allowed to do with an ebook (e.g. read in browser, download, copy and paste) depends on the platform where it's found, as well as any restrictions put in place by the ebook publisher.

Our largest ebook platforms also have the most specific requirements for viewing and downloading ebooks, and are covered in this guide - select a platform from the tabs to the left for more information.

Remember these tips for using Butler ebooks:

  • Use WorldCat Discovery to search across all ebooks (rather than having to search within multiple ebook databases)
  • Download chapters instead of 'checking out' the entire book whenever possible
  • When you do a full book 'check out,' make sure you log into your personal account if you try to access the book on a different device
  • Some ebook titles have restrictions on the number of users who can access them simultaneously, so once you're done reading an ebook, please close your browser tab to end your session (which will release the ebook so someone else can read it)

Looking for popular fiction?

Don't forget your public library! Many offer ebook lending with your library account, and they specialize in different types of content than what you'll find in our collections.

Butler students are eligible to get an Indy PL card - see more information online or visit any branch location.
