You may search or browse by subject/topic to locate a title in Ebook Central.
While most titles can be read immediately right away, some titles on Ebook Central may require you to submit a request to access. This request must be approved by a librarian before you have access. Requests are responded to Monday - Friday during regular business hours. Titles that require a request will say "Available on request" on the search results page:
To read an eBook online, select a title from the search screen. Click the "Read Online" button underneath the cover image.
See the video below from ProQuest Ebook Central for more information on the the different file formats (EPUB and PDF) available in the online reader.
Note: As of May 2025, the Ebook Central platform prioritizes EPUBs, making EPUB the default display format in the online reader instead of PDF. You can toggle between the two formats in the online reader, when both are available.
Ebook Central usually allows for both PDF chapter downloading, and full ebook downloading (for up to 7 days). We recommend downloading individual chapters, as this does not require downloading Adobe Digital Editions, and does not "checkout" one copy of an ebook, reducing the number of copies available for other users for ebooks where we do not have unlimited user access.
To download a chapter within the Online reader, make sure you are viewing the book as a PDF and then select the "Chapter Download" button. The total number of pages that can be downloaded is set by the publisher.
To download the entire book for a checkout period (not recommended), click the "Full Download" button. You must have Adobe Digital Editions downloaded on your device to access content.
Please see the tutorial from ProQuest Ebook Central below for more specific instructions on ebook downloads.
Ebook Central ebooks can be read instantly within any Internet browser.
Ebook Central offers several options for reading on devices:
1. Download standard PDFs for one chapter at a time using any browser or PDF program. Will work with most computers and devices, including the Kindle.
2. Download DRM-enriched pdf files for the entire book or individual chapters. Will work on most computers and devices, but not the Kindle. Requires Adobe Digital Editions for full title download.
