Who to contact for Library Instruction?
Butler Libraries operate on a subject librarian model where all University majors and programs are assigned a subject librarian, who provides library instruction and research support for the students and faculty in those majors and programs. To identify your librarian:
- Consult the Libraries' Subject Librarian directory to identify the librarian who works with your major.
- Or, contact Sally Neal, Associate Dean for Instruction and User Services, sneal@butler.edu, 317-940-9949 to identify your librarian.
How can your Subject Librarian support your teaching?
- Librarians can assist you in designing research projects, papers, and creative products that incorporate library resources.
- They deliver in-class and virtual instruction on multiple aspects of the research process:
- You can assign Librarians as teachers/TAs in Canvas to deliver library instructional content such as tutorials, assignments, etc.
- To add your subject librarian to your Canvas course, consult this IT FAQ on adding instructors to your Canvas course.
- Subject Librarians are your contact for assistance with linking to library resources in Canvas; applying copyright best practices in uploading content into the LMS; purchasing readings and texts for your courses, etc.
Direct your students to the Subject Librarian for a Research Consultation
- Librarians also provide one-on-one research consultations with students, in person or virtually. Encourage your students to contact their subject librarian to take advantage of this individualized research assistance.
- Instructors often require students to meet with the subject librarian for assignments or provide additional credit for such engagement. Work with your subject librarian to see if this is feasible, given the class size.
