World Music

This guide provides basic resources for the study of World Music (MH 308).

Finding Recordings

You can find an wide-array of resources, both streaming and physical media (LP, CD, and DVD) by using WorldCat, the library catalog. Searching by Subject Heading will let you find material that shares a common theme, and from there you can use the limiters on the side menu to filter your results, for example "Held by Library" or "Format" to limit to only music recordings held by Butler Libraries.

For example:

su:"popular music"

This search is for the Subject (su) "popular music" -- putting it in quotation marks will let you search that specific phrase. Limiting it to recordings held by Butler returns over 1000 catalog results, hundreds of them CDs and LPs and many more streaming audio files.

Here are additional search examples, you can edit these searches to plug in many different genres of music:

su:"World music"

su:"Folk music"

su:"Folk dance music"

su:"Blues (Music)"

su:"Celtic music"

su:"Fiddle tunes"

su:"Klezmer music"

su:"Rock music"

Butler-owned CDs are in the basement of Irwin.  Recordings at the library do circulate, and you can check out a USB disc drive for your laptop at the Information Commons Desk on the main level of Irwin.

Butler-owned vinyl recordings are located in the basement of Irwin Library.  These recordings do not check out and must be listened to at the nearby Turn-table station.  Headsets are available for check-out at the Information Commons Desk on the main level of Irwin.

For example:

su:"popular music"

This search is for the Subject (su) "popular music" -- putting it in quotation marks will let you search that specific phrase. Limiting it to video formats held by Butler returns hundreds of catalog results, including dozens of DVDs and many more streaming video links.

Here are additional search examples, you can edit these searches to plug in many different genres of music:

su:"World music"

su:"Folk music"

su:"Folk dance music"

su:"Jazz"

su:"Hip-hop"

su:"Punk rock"

su:"Ragas"

su:"Navajo Indians" AND su:"Music"

Use the WorldCat Discover Box (found on the Butler Libraries homepage) to begin your search for Video resources owned by Butler Libraries, PALNI (Private Academic Library Network of Indiana) Libraries and other WorldCat Libraries around the world.

Look at the "Format" limiter box on the left-hand side of the screen when you get the results from your initial search.  You may have to select the "See more" button.  Next, find the "Video" designation and click on the appropriate box.  N.B. The Butler Libraries do not collect VHS or Blu-ray tapes.

The individual DVDs owned by the Butler Libraries will have the following text at the bottom of the brief record for the item:

Text that reads "available" with a green check to the left. Underneath it says "Butler University Libraries"

The cases of Butler-owned DVDs are shelved in the front of the stacks in the southeast quadrant of Irwin Library's lower level (turn to the right at the foot of the stairs).   To check out a DVD, retrieve the case from the stacks and take it to the Information Commons service desk.  The person at the desk will retrieve the appropriate DVD and help you check it out.

DVDs at the library do circulate, and you can check out a USB disc drive for your laptop at the Information Commons Desk on the main level of Irwin. DVDs can also be viewed using the equipment in the A-V carrels in the northwest corner of Irwin's lower level.  Headsets are available for check-out at the service desk.

To access video resources NOT owned by the Butler University Libraries, you will need to make an interlibrary loan request.  Click on the "Interlibrary Loan" tab/page on this LibGuide to access the ILL tutorial and register.

The Butler Libraries classify video resources using the Library of Congress (LC) system.  You can see a full description of the "M Class" by going to the Library of Congress Classification Outline:  Class M--Music.
