Welcome

Welcome! This guide is intended to assist students, researchers, and community members in familiarizing themselves with the broad field of global Indigenous studies. It provides access to Butler-specific materials, in addition to links to a wide range of resources, including books, digital collections, websites, organizations and much more. We recognize that this is not an exhaustive set of resources and view this guide as a living document to be updated and adapted over time.

We welcome feedback from users, stakeholders, and experts. If you would like to provide input about how to make this guide more useful, please email specialcollections@butler.edu. Suggestions will be reviewed, and changes may be made based on institutional policy.

Indigenous Peoples | United Nations
In the United Nations' fight against racism, they’ve established Indigenous peoples as vulnerable ethnic groups. The website provides background information on global indigeneity, UN action, where they are, and links to resources.
IWGIA - International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs
Since 1968, IWGIA has cooperated with Indigenous Peoples' organizations and international institutions to promote recognition and implementation of the rights of Indigenous Peoples. IWGIA works to empower Indigenous Peoples through documentation, capacity development, and advocacy on a local, regional, and international level. To achieve our mission we provide documentation, support advocacy, and empower indigenous peoples’ organizations and institutions via global partnerships.
Countries - IWGIA
The International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA) publishes yearly reports on the status of Indigenous Peoples' rights in countries on all continents with detailed country reports prepared by experts, Indigenous activists and scholars.
Center for World Indigenous Studies
The Center for World Indigenous Studies is a global community of activist scholars advancing the rights of indigenous people through the application of traditional knowledge.
eHRAF World Cultures
eHRAF is an award-winning, membership-based database containing information on present and past aspects of cultural and social life for a worldwide sample of societies. Ideal for both exploratory, in-depth cultural research and cross-cultural comparisons.
World Heritage and Indigenous Peoples
Many cultural and natural World Heritage sites are home to indigenous peoples. As the UNESCO policy on engaging with indigenous peoples recognizes, World Heritage sites are often located within land managed by indigenous peoples whose land use, knowledge and cultural and spiritual values and practices are related to heritage. Inspired by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), the UNESCO policy embraces the right of indigenous peoples to their traditional lands, territories and recognizes traditional management systems as part of new management approaches. It describes indigenous peoples as stewards of a significant part of the world’s biological, cultural and linguistic diversity and as partners in site conservation and protection activities.
