Children's and Young Adult Literature

Banned Books Week

“This is a dangerous time for readers and the public servants who provide access to reading materials. Readers, particularly students, are losing access to critical information, and librarians and teachers are under attack for doing their jobs.”
- Deborah Caldwell-Stone, director of the ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom

Books are often challenged or banned due to content deemed inappropriate for children and young adults. Launched in 1982, Banned Books Week focuses on efforts to educate the public on book banning, censorship, and the support of freedom of expression and freedom of knowledge. It also serves to support literature that expresses a variety of opinions, even those deemed unpopular. To learn more about the history of Banned Books Week and the goals of the movement, visit https://www.ala.org/bbooks/banned
