Options

Options for finding picture books in libraries

  • Browse the shelves
    • This is fun to do
    • You can check out a book right away, if you see the one(s) you need
  • Check the catalog to:
    • Find out what is in the library before you get there
    • See what might be available at other libraries
    • Request that a book be held for you or sent to your library

Examples of searching library catalogs

There are similarities among library catalogs along with a few differences due to the software used by the library and how it has been customized.

Demos of searching catalogs are linked and shown below.

  • Evergreen (an example of searching a catalog shared by more than 125 libraries in Indiana)
  • Indianapolis Public Library (an example of searching the catalog for a large public library with many branches)
  • Butler Libraries (an example of using WorldCat Discovery, customized for Butler, which covers many libraries around the world including PALNI and state university libraries)

These demos are for very basic searches, but you can also do more advanced searching and/or use the limiters on the left side of the results list to narrow down your results.  Please let me know if you have questions about searching.
