Neurodiversity: Tic Disorders Including Tourette Syndrome

definitions

What are Tic Disorders?

Tics are compulsive, repetitive sounds or movements that a person can't control.

The American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5-TR) is what professionals consult to diagnose tic disorders.

There are 3 tic disorders:

1. Persistent motor or vocal tic disorder

2. Provisional tic disorder

3. Tourette Syndrome *diagnosed when a person has 2 or more motor tics that began before the age of 18.
