What is mental illness or mental disorder? According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, mental illness is defined as a condition that negatively affects a person's thinking, feeling or mood for a sustained period of time. You might be wondering “Is depression a mental illness? What about anxiety?” Yes, they are. In fact, they are the most common types of mental illnesses. In this video, we cover 10 of the more common mental illnesses.

In the arena of mental health care, standard approaches do not always work. The speaker, who - at 18 years of age - has endured more than a half-decade of mental health challenges and institutionalization, proposes adding self-acceptance, including acceptance of one’s current mental health state; self-trust; and other inward-focused attitudes to mental health therapy. 

When stress got to be too much for TED Fellow Sangu Delle, he had to confront his own deep prejudice: that men shouldn't take care of their mental health. In a personal talk, Delle shares how he learned to handle anxiety in a society that's uncomfortable with emotions.
