Neurodiversity: Anxiety, Panic, and OCD

Definitions

What are Anxiety, Panic, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders?

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) consists of severe, ongoing anxiety that interferes with daily activities. Symptoms include constant worry, restlessness, and trouble with concentration, among others. While occasional anxiety is a normal part of life, people with GAD feel extremely worried or nervous more frequently than those who don't, even when there is little to no reason to worry about them.

Panic Disorder is when people have frequent and unexpected panic attacks, feel out of control and have intense worry, and may fear or avoid places where panic attacks have occurred in the past. Not everyone who has panic attacks has a panic disorder; it occurs specifically when panic attacks become frequent enough to negatively influence somebody's life.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder occurs when individuals experience uncontrollable and recurring thoughts and repetitive behaviors. These thoughts and behaviors, or obsessions and compulsions, interfere in their daily lives. They can cause depression, anxiety, panic, and other similar symptoms.
