Kwame Dawes is the author of twenty books of poetry and numerous other books of fiction, criticism, and essays. In 2016 his book, Speak from Here to There, a co-written collection of verse with Australian poet John Kinsella appeared.  His most recent collection, City of Bones: A Testament (Northwestern University Press) will appear in 2017. He is Glenna Luschei Editor of Prairie Schooner and teaches at the University of Nebraska and the Pacific MFA Program.  He is Director of the African Poetry Book Fund and Artistic Director of the Calabash International Literary Festival.

Often called 'the busiest man in literature', Kwame will celebrate the publication of eight new books in 2016-2017.

  • Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Award for service to the arts in South Carolina

    • “The SCAC annually presents the South Carolina Governor’s Awards for the Arts, the highest honor the state gives in the arts. These awards honor South Carolina arts organizations, patrons, artists, members of the business community, and government entities who maximize their roles as innovators, supporters and advocates of the arts. In 1980, the awards took on a special significance with their designation as the official “Governor’s Awards for the Arts.”

  • Guggenheim Fellowship for Poetry (2012)

    • A Guggenheim is an award given to 175 people every year and consists of funds given to writers to enable them to pursue their projects. This is a very prestigious honor!

  • Musgrave Silver Medal for contribution to the Arts in Jamaica

    • This is a prestigious award given out by the Institute of Jamaica for outstanding achievements in Literature, Arts, and Sciences in Jamaica and the West Indies.

  • The Poets & Writers Barnes and Noble Writers for Writers Award

    • "The Barnes & Noble Writers for Writers Award celebrates authors who have given generously to other writers or to the broader literary community. The award is presented each year at Poets & Writers’ annual gala. It is named for Barnes & Noble in appreciation of the company’s long-standing support of Poets & Writers."

  • Pushcart Prize

    • ​​​​​​​This is an award given to short stories, poetry, and essays published in literary magazines in a given year. Each magazine can submit their six best pieces, so being given this award is a big deal!

  • Windham-Campbell Prize for Poetry

    • ​​​​​​​"The mission of the prizes is to call attention to literary achievement and provide writers with the opportunity to focus on their work independent of financial concerns. The first prizes were announced on Monday, March 4, 2013. A ceremony conferring the awards took place at Yale on September 10, 2013, followed by a week-long celebration of the writers. In addition to a citation and award, recipients of the Donald Windham-Sandy M. Campbell Literature Prizes receive an unrestricted grant of $175,000 to support their writing."
